The average roughness, Ra, is expressed in units of height. In the Imperial (English) system, Ra typically expressed in "millionths" of an inch. This is also referred to as "microinches" or sometimes just as "micro".

Stage 2 - all of stage 1, and into bowl (area under valve)

Flow Bench:

RobsAutoMachine uses a SuperFlow 600 Flow bench. This measure the amount of air a cylinder head and move relative to cam lift/duration.

Rebuild Process

Engines undergoing the rebuild process, begins in the disassembly area. Parts are thoroughly cleaned using a hot tank- some parts using a Ultra-Sonic cleaner. Engine parts are reconditioned back to OEM specifications, and then they are combined with new parts in the assembly area. The rebuilt engine is painted and ready for you to pick up.

Disassembly :

Aka, The tear down. Each engine undergoing the rebuilding process is disassembled and inspected for cracks or failures. Tear down starts with the externals, such as the water pump, intake manifold, valve covers, oil pan and cylinder heads. The internals (inside the block) begins once the externals are removed. Camshaft, pistons, rods and the crankshaft are thus removed and made ready for cleaning.

Cleaning:

The majority of the engine parts will undergoes cleaning, then reconditioned for use again. The remaining parts (such as: bearings, rings, pistons, etc) are sent to the recycler, and are replaced with new.

Cleaning is by way of a Hot Tank (solvent heated to quickly and thoroughly clean the deepest grime and oil. Here at RobsAuto Machine, we use a Enclosed High Pressure Jet, Hot Tank system. The heated - high pressure solvent cleans absolutely everything it hits. After a good cleaning, some parts (like cylinder heads) are rechecked for failures / cracks using a process known as Magnaflux (Magnetic Particles are used for magnetic particle inspection method in the detection of SURFACE and SUBSURFACE indications in FERROUS materials).

Reconditioning:

The engine block cylinder walls are bored (usually .030 -thirty thousandths of an inch) over standard. This process leaves a rough finish on the cylinder walls and will cause premature wear if left untouched. Honing the rough finish makes for a smoother cylinder wall finish vs. the boring process.

Cylinder Heads are resurfaced to ensure a flat surface, critical during assembly to the engine block. Valves are reconditioned or replaced when needed, new valve seals applied and valve springs check or replaced to ensure correct resistance (lb/in), installed height, then reassembled.

Crankshafts are resurfaced to properly shape the rod and main journals. This process is also known as turning down .010 (normally 10/10 in respects to rod and main journals.)

New pistons, rings and reconditioned connecting rods are fitted together. The reconditioning of rods are done at both the small end, and big end.

Assembly:

Assembly takes place in our assembly clean room to help reduce dust and dirt that can cause premature engine wear. At the stage of the process, all parts are fitted together (new and reconditioned). The typically new parts in a rebuild are (not limited to: rod, main and camshaft bearings- pistons and rings lifters- and flat tappet camshafts seals and gaskets oil pump timing gears and chain). Assembly each component (heads, crankshaft- etc) are torque into place to ensure clamping forces are within specifications as outlined by each manufacture of that engine.

Owned by Rob Jr, this Mustang is an All-Motor-Beast.

The “old” engine combo saw an respectable 390HP running 10.7 in a 1/4mi.

Out with the old, in with the new… This recent combo was sent to the dyno shop next door. A few pulls on their [Mustang MD] dyno, we saw the horsepower climb to an impressive 430 HP at the rear wheels without the aid of NOS or Forced Induction. Additionally impressive, this Mustang is a daily driver!

During the build I went down to Rob's Auto Machine shop in Hayward to check out the machine work that was being done to the block. Rob went all out and so far the block looks amazing!
